Favorite DE razor

Postby dini » Tue May 30, 2017 9:06 am

Like nearly all of us on here , I have more razors than I will ever need . Whenever I shave I fond myself reaching for either the Fatip Picollolo or Pearl short handle OC . My trusty merkurs and EJ and a few other have basically been consigned to the bench on a permanent basis ( really should sell those )

Anybody else have THAT razor that they reflexively reach for ?

For me it was the Parker 99R. Now it is the Variant.

This is how I shave.

Muhle R41 - without a doubt. Love that razor. Other favorites include the Merkur Progress, Shovelhead, Picollo, adjustable gillettes and I'll end up naming everything in my cache

Although used infrequently, I like to rotate between the Fatboy, Slim & R41.

The R106 is used exclusively for head shaving during summer.

Mine has to be my adjustable slim and super 109, still waiting to acquire my Parker.

Tough choice, I haven't settled on one specific one yet, although if I had to only keep one it would probably be an Old Type at this stage.

If I had to live with just one all rounder razor:

Vintage = Old Type combination of an aggressive open comb head on a heavy handle is great.
Modern = EJ DE89 is perfectly balanced, medium aggressiveness, top quality.

I would go with a vintage razor, but I think our fathers or grandfathers would choose a modern design for being so much easier to live with.

Lol I agree with Mohamed on this. I was looking forward to the variant but didn't expect it to be as good as it is. Before that mine used to be the Lion

For a couple of days growth it's probably the 34c but for more than four days growth it is definitely the R41 without a doubt.

I have a few that I rotate quite often, including the Gillette English Aristocrats, both closed and open combs, and the Gillette English Rocket razors.

My favourite is the vintage Eclipse Red Ring razor though. It looks good, works incredibly well on one day stubble or removing a beard. Can be adjusted for a more aggressive shave or a relatively mild shave. Makes good use of almost any blade I've tried. Good grip on the handle which happens to also be the right length that isn't too long or too short.

A mention has to be made for the 1940s English Knockout bakelite razor. Effortless to shave with and it makes buffing a dream. Probably one of the smoothest shavers I've ever shaved with.

I do enjoy the Old Types as well but tend to get on better with razors from the 1930/40s.

Ever since I received a 1950's Super Speed I'm hard-pressed to change. I have this razor since 2006.

An update to this . While the Pearl OC has fallen by the wayside , the Fatip still is a contender but my new favourite is an r41 head on a very heavy , stubby stainless handle that I bought from Maggards. 4/5 days growth mowed down with comfort .

Is your R41 a 2011 or 2013?

Mine would definitely be the Rockwell 2C using #3 baseplate.

Several years ago I was gifted a New Zealand-made Goodfella. It’s a very mild razor but it’s extremely efficient. I’m starting to think it may be my favourite DE presently.

Hi Guys

I am loving my Rockwell 6C on plate 2. It allows for daily shaves and the weight simply feels awesome.

The Rockwell has for me become the razor with which I compare all the others. I consistently get a fantastic shave from #3 baseplate.

While I don't have that much experience with DEs, of my three the Rockwell is my favourite, it's such a smooth operator.

This is really difficult! I started using DE razors just over a year ago so I’m still learning.I started with the Merkur 34C and it’s still the razor I compare everything else with. If I’m stranded on an island I guess it would be my choice of razor. I like to collect the old Gillette vintage razors and so far my second choice would be the Fat Handle Tech. It’s not a fancy razor but it just works! On the adjustables it would definitely be the Merkur Progress. I just love the weight on that razor!
