STAR BUCKS ARE COMING TO SA

I’ve read an article last week in the Coffee Magazine that Star Bucks is coming to South Africa. Starbucks are good in packaging their products so much so that they convinced their customers overseas that their price tag seems fair. On average a coffee from them in the US cost R50 but depending on your order you can pay up to R80 for a tailor made blend. It will be interesting to see how they plan to capture the South African audience.

We had a couple of Starbucks coffees when we were over in Japan. Can't remember what we actually paid for them though.

My concern is that Starbucks would be expensive by local standards and there for the rest of the coffee industry will gain the freedom to charge more for their coffee. David Donde of Truth Coffee in Cape Town already wrote a letter to Starbucks stating the following: “Now your arrival with your relatively overpriced offering onto almost every street corner will ironically empower those previously considered the coffee disadvantaged, as anything from where you come from is considered coll. And for this we are thankful. Really we are. Because you know, you guys are a perfect gateway to the drug we peddle. Caffeine being about the last legal and socially acceptable one out there.”
The CEO of Taste Holdings although stated that the price of coffee would be “market related”.
I suppose we can only wait and see what the impact of Starbucks coming to SA will have on the daily coffee consumer’s pocket.

I always thought the high price of the coffee was to cover the free wifi?

Our Beans about Coffee has a happy hour from 06:30 to 07:30 seven days a week, during which you can buy an excellent large flat white, eg for R10. During the rest of the day, the same cup will set you back R23. Coffee is as much about the beverage as it is about socialising and thus getting to know people. This is the reason that I dislike places like Starbucks, destroying the intimacy of it all. Another reason is that, as far as I know, they do not support fair trade, which prevents sustainable production of high quality beans at affordable prices.

I like the idea of a happy hour and R23 a cup of coffee is still up my alley. :D
