Reverse Calabash made from Olive wood, silver accent ring and green stem (semi-translucent).
Also a matching poker.

It's all Bles' fault I tell you!

A RC bowl is a Reverse Calabash bowl and briar is the cut of wood which is best suited to pipes for its hardness and durability.

Reverse Calabash - where there is a second chamber in the bowl to cool the smoke down before it's drawn up the stem and into the mouth.

(I sound like a full on expert   )

Being made by Jonathan Taylor of African Hardwood Pipes.

Sweet!!

But I'd have a hard time running with these around my ears and at that price I could buy myself a new bicycle (or spend 3 weeks in Morzine riding the trails).

Ok Mr Bles, what pipe tobacco would you recommend for a novice to try out?

Bear in mind I have JJ Cale across the road from me so have a ready supply of local and imported tobacco.

I popped in the other day and they are retailing 50g tins from R170 upwards (I think that was for some Peterson mixture).

erm, no, just no...

from someone with zero experience (apart from a bad one) i'd avoid latakia at all costs, I do still think having a toke now and then could be a relaxing thing, but certainly not how I went at it. Speaking of which, have you tried the Dr Mcnab briar Bles? Does is actually work? :oo

Start out with some aromatics first before you attempt the more serious English, Oriental and Balkan blends. But don't go and buy yet. Ask the tobacconist to sell you some samples first. I have plenty of tins and jars sitting around. I'll wrap up a view samples for you of some of my tobacco I recon you might fancy and if your driver is in the area he can pop in and collect. ;)

No DS, I haven't tried it yet. It is still nesting between my other 18 pipes. I can't see why it would not work.

By the look of the weather not any time soon. ;) My younger brother is finally getting married at the age of 40 so if all goes well I'll be flying down in April next year. My vacation for this year is already booked and paid for this December at Midlands Saddle & Trout which I recon would be idyllic for some pipe smoking and fly fishing. :D
