Cooler Box

I'm looking at getting a "semi-decent" coolerbox as the ones I currently (Cheap Addis & a very old Coleman) are not too effective.

Like most coolerboxes, they are only generally used a couple of times per year so I'm not looking to spend a fortune.

There are a couple of SA manufacturers whose products would suit my needs:

https://www.evakool.co.za/
http://www.romercoolerboxes.co.za/

I'm looking at these two and am wondering if the Evakool is worth the additional R1k.

https://www.takealot.com/romer-coolerbo ... ID41430985
https://www.evakool.co.za/collections/p ... 4665674446

The above two are similar capacities but If I go for the Romer, I can get the 65lt still cheaper than the Evakool.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Couple of times a year - go for the less expensive one, both will achieve the same goal - and the brown one is more subtle on the eye

I really like your two options,

the bottle opener built into the top of the Romer sells it for me

a few years back while on holiday, I had to buy a new cooler, and ended up only being able to find a Coleman combo like the one pictured below in the little dorpie we were in.

while thermally its performs really well, I curse the fact that it doesn't have a decent Clipping mechanism for the lid, and the lid is inclined to fall closed.

I've decided when this one gives up the ghost, I might splash out on this bad boy if I win the lotto https://www.outdoorwarehouse.co.za/prod ... de-pro-110

Although it is about 1k more than Evakool. if I had to pull the trigger today, id go for the Romer though

Thanks gents.

@Gaza - That's the one i currently have and it must be at least 12 years old.

I need to measure the Coleman tonight to see the volume because size wise it's suitable.

@DS - thanks for that link. Looks like the Romer won.

It's on daily deals today... buying something on takealot and having it come on daily deals a day or two later has happened to me way too often :oo

BTW, I'm still trying to figure out where to put a lock on the "lockable lid". :?

Polistyrene fish boxes perform better than any of the cheapies like coleman etc... if you discount lifespan... but they are really good keeping stuff cool..

This past weekend was the 1st opportunity to test out the Romer coolerbox.

I froze water into a couple of 2lt ice-cream containers on Wednesday evening, so had a couple of nice solid blocks of ice.

Loaded up the coolerbox at lunchtime on Friday with the usual, beers/meat/salads/milk/yoghurt/colddrinks, and used the Romer as normal, making sure that the lid was closed properly after every use. The Romer was kept on the outside the permanent tent in the shade for the weekend and I did empty out some of the water from the 2lt containers on Sunday morning. The food and beers were kept lovely and cold and when I got home last night around 17:30 and emptied out the Romer, at least 50% of the iceblock remained.

Overall, I'm impressed.

A negative though, the bottle opener on the inside of the lid doesn't really work too well as it spilt beer which then ran down the inside of coolerbox.

Sounds like an excellent product and back on "special" on takealot. Spilling beer? That was uncalled for - that beer did no harm :whip

My wife and I got one of those on a camping holiday in St Lucia and it worked great for us. Cheap, small, highly mobile and kept our drinks frosty the whole day at the beach.

Cooler Box

Postby ShavingB » Sun Dec 10, 2017 10:32 pm

I think you made a good choice @Thug although the good old Coleman are excellent cooler boxes. Love how the Romer has a Landy parking on the cooler boxes in a video! must be strong..

We have had ours for over 22 years. It has been on many trips to the Vaal Dam, Vaal River, Rowing days and most frequently to the bush. It once got attacked by a hyena about 15 years ago as seen in the pics below but is still holding up well. It was dragged away from under a trailer and we had to chase the hyenas to get it back.

Not sure if the new ones are built as well but this will not need replacement any time soon.

Image

The handle got broken during the attack and required fixing, still holding up good.
