New to the forum

Postby Jimbob » Fri Feb 22, 2019 11:03 pm

Hi. I’ve been wetshaving my whole life but hated it. I typically used to hack the cartridge razor theough my beard while taking a shower and sometimes it was painfull!

I sometimes travel to the USA and while there beginning 2018), I realized I had to be more presentable and I remembered my Dad telling me I need to get a shaving brush.

I acquired my fisrt cheap badger brush and also bought a Merkus 34C HD safety razor (after looking at some youtube reviews). This is still my ‘go to’ razor to date.

The hobby bit me badly (RAD - razor acquisition disorder) and Ive been acquiring all kinds of old vintage razors and even some newer modern ones as well. I honestly thought I was alone with this crazy hobby in SA! I am so glad there are other South Africans that have discovered this old time way of shaving and I look forward to hear your stories and learning more.

Shave of the day - currently in Namibia so I brought an old Gillette Tech razor with me to try out. I recently had it replated in PE where I live and hadnt used it before. Great shaver! Very gentle and not aggressive at all. Shaving soap is from SimplyBee (bought here in Namibia at a pharmacy). Great soap with a nice honey smell. Provides an excellent lather and my skin stays slick even after removing the lather with each pass. For a brush I used my synthetic. Blades are Voskhod blades. They are made in Russia and they are super smooth. They are not as sharp as Feathers ( too sharp and aggressive for me) and they are my default goto blade!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Welcome aboard Jimbob!

Myself, I’m not South African but a 64 year old Israeli guy living in Canada. One thing I’m happy to say is the best artisan soaps are from South Africa!

Thanks guys! I’m glad I discovered this forum! Can’t wait to start buying some local soaps! I have some in mind from Bunduneard and RVT and their prices are really good compared to some of the soaps abroad.

Ive read through some of the older posts and its a wealth of good information.

Just a question to you guys..... do you also enjoy watching shaving videos? My wife thinks Im crazy!

My wife is also right, all the time, but she knows that I might not always be right, but I'm never wrong. Right at the start of this journey I watched a few shaving videos from geofatboy, but haven't in a few years.
