To revive this thread a little - yes, that's a very Turkish, in fact Middle Eastern custom. In Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia lemon cologne is brought as a gift to a man who is recovering from surgery or an illness. My wife is Israeli of Moroccan origin and my inlaws brought me some Turkish lemon cologne they had bought at a Middle Eastern specialty store when they came to visit me the day after my recent hernia surgery.
