Got this bar of Sunlight soap from my mother in law, think the competition is still on? She's had this for around 70+ years! :surprised

Buddy of mine with monster Sonneblom. With automated gear and the high taxes on Klipdrift brannas our farmers are finding it diffficult keeping occupied, that is when they are not busy warding off criminals!

Thank-you Sir, apologies for the delayed response - getting settled has taken longer than expected

I received an offer from our DBN based offices and could not say no. Traffic is a thing of the past and the living beside a nature reserve is bliss.

I will hopefully be back in action over the next few weeks

From my backyard I have a view of the Magalies Berg within the Wonderboom Nature Reserve. The reserve entrance is 2km away from my home and in the afternoons when running from work to home I pass the reserve when ascending and descending the Magalies Berg along Voortrekker Road. On the crest of the mountain are also the remaining ruins of Fort Wonderboom. It was a chill overcast morning on Friday, 29 September 2017 when I decided to hike up the steep 2km hill to celebrate the 120th birthday of this fort. This was one of the four forts built to protect Pretoria after the failed Jameson raid. Fort Wonderboom was completed in September 1897 and in October 1899, 18 men were stationed at this Fort along with a long tom, a 37mm Maxim-Nordefelt and a Martini-Henry hand maxim. By the time Pretoria was invaded by the British during the Anglo-Boer war in June 1900, only one soldier was station at Wonderboom fort, while the artillery and other soldiers were sent to the front. The fort was meant to be converted into a prison along with Fort Daspoortrand, but instead, its roof was demolished during the Second World War. It is believed this occurred under the instructions of Prime Minister Jan Smuts who feared the fort may be used by anti-government forces. This area was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1937. This 200 ha reserve is also famous for its magnificent specimen of Ficus salicifolia, a wild fig called the "Wonderboom".
The fig tree is older than 1 000 years, and legend has it that it grew this big because the chief of an indigenous tribe lies buried beneath its roots. It is recorded that the tree was once big enough to shade 1 000 people at a time, or 22 ox wagons with 20 oxen in front of each! Today it is much smaller – probably because of the devastating fire in 1870 started by a hunting party, or because of a parasitic infestation, which put it in quarantine for 20 years. Over the years the branches have grown longer, hanging lower and lower until they touched the ground, rooted and produced a circle of daughter trees. There are now three circles of daughter trees surrounding the original tree.
OK, enough talk. Let’s get on with some photos taken along my hike.

Beautifull photos Bles and great write-up. Pearls of knowledge, finding these hidden gems scattered around the country is always interesting. Are those wild figs edible?
