Proraso Green
De Vergulde Hand
A cheap blade bank
1948 Gillette Fat Handle Tech razor

Found both the soaps at Yogi's Barbershop in Cape Town. Prices not too bad.

Close up of the blade bank. Only R3.40 at Merrypak.

Yes, both the scent and the performance of Proraso Red are super nice. You gonna like the Proraso Blue aftershave cream as well. Just let me know if you can pick up the "wine cork" note in its scent. Just want to confirm that there is nothing funny with my nose.

Very reliable dealer as well with overnight delivery (at least to Cape Town). The only problem with them is that once something go out-of-stock, the re-stock will take long.

Thanks, the condition did surprise me. It was really dusty but cleaned up really well. I've seen he ones that have gone a bit yellow. They look vintage.

I also received a few new products, posted a shot in SOTD but thought I would expand a bit more here on my thoughts.

These are from a US artisanal soap maker Chiseled Face Groomatorium, I got both the soap and aftershave splash in the Ghost Town Barber scent. I was originally attracted to the splash as I liked the ingredient list (Alcohol, Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera Juice, Calendula, Sodium Lactate, Menthol, Menthol, Vitamin B5 Pro, Astaxanthin) I liked that it included Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera juice.

I saw few online reviews that the soap was also a good performer so I got the soap as well, this too has a very decent ingredient list (Stearic Acid, Aloe Vera Juice, Potassium Hydroxide, Beef Tallow, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Glycerin, Fragrance, Mango Butter, Avocado Oil, Silk Powder) I am a fan of tallow based soaps.

Here is a shot of the open soap:

20 April 2015 Soap.jpg

The soap has a fairly wide opening and was very easy to load, I enjoyed the scent the main notes are described as being bergamot, basil leaf, white patchouli, oakmoss, texas cedar, leather, smoke, and gunpowder. It also created a lovely thick and slick lather.

I had a good 2.5 pass shave (don't go against the grain on the upper lip). Finished off with the aftershave splash and am very happy with the face feel after the shave.

Thanks for reading.

There was a review on TSN of the Chiseled Face Cryogen, which if I seem to recall correctly stated something to the effect of "don't use this soap unless you really really really like menthol" :D

I think that comment is specifically for the Cryogen scent which is very heavy on the menthol, for the cryogen they took the menthol in their normal splashes and multiplied it by 11 :o. There isn't any menthol in the Ghost Town Barber soap. I wasn't brave enough to try cryogen.

My shipment also included Maggard Razors artisan shave soap and aftershave in the London Barbershop scent. Here are my thoughts on both products.

I liked the scent but the soap scent was not very strong however I didn't bloom the soap prior to loading. The soap is tallow based and loaded in a fairly large container making it easy to load.

21 April 2015 Soap 2.jpg

Despite not blooming as this is a fairly soft soap it did load very easily and created lather fairly easily, I was happy with both the cushion and slickness, here is a shot of the lather:

21 April 2015 Lather.JPG

(not sure why this image is rotated)

Happy with the performance of the soap.

I wanted to try the aftershave as it did not contain alcohol. The scent complemented the soap and was a good finish to the shave also resulted in good face feel, not tacky or oily.
