What a day. Pension / grant payout, and it was also Eid (the day of sacrifice). We headed out to the farm to slaughter 5 sheep. My brother did the honours this year, and about an hour later 5 woolly sheep were skinned, gutted, and hung up in hte cold room.

Tomorrow should be slightly eaasier lookign forward to the morning shave with some new gear

Hey RVT,

What happened to the Sheep Wool?

I'm thinking you missed a trick there.

RVT Wool Fat??

The wool is still attached to the sheep skin. It just just gets donated. Must be a hell of a process getting the soap out of the wool.

Soap out of the wool? Funny that I've never seen a green sheep considering how much sunlight soap sells...

Gets you thinking about South African sources of fat....

Nguni cow tallow?
Karoo sheep fat?

Hi JHB,

Indeed it's quite a trick to find these fats. I enjoy making natural soaps, but I have to render my own tallow if I want to use it in soap. That takes hours and hours and still leaves you with the risk of impurities.
I don't mind cooking with it though. Apparently, this is the best way to make vetkoek, but I haven't tried it yet.

It's easier to find lard than tallow.

I've at least found a supplier for lanolin (wool fat) now and that feels great in soap.

So nobody's talking about the Springboks this weekend??? Can't blame you.
The All blacks are just in a league of their own.

Luckily I was at my son's cricket in the morning, so I missed the game. Just saw a few highlights afterwards.
