Top End soaps

Postby Thug » Wed Jan 06, 2016 8:21 am

With the greatest of respect to our local importers and artisan soap makers, there are very few recognised top class shaving soaps/creams available in South Africa. Obviously this is due to our exchange rate and if one can purchase from an imported source they are frighteningly expensive.

One of the more experienced users on SRP came up with these "tiers" of shaving soaps / creams which a lot of the members happen to agree with.

First Tier, in no particular order, products still available, and names off the top of my head:

Martin de Candre soap, Castle Forbes cream, Xpec cream, Le Pere Lucien soap, Czech & Speak soap, Antica Barbieria Cola soap, Esbjerg cream, Baum.Be. cream, D.R. Harris Arlington, Marlborough and Windsor soaps, Alvarez Gomez cream, Acqua di Parma cream, Penhaligon's cream, St. James of London cream, Trumper violet cream, Klar Seifen soap.

Second Tier, in no particular order:

Mitchell's Wool Fat soap, I Coloniali soap, Provence Sante soap, La Cigale soap, Saponificio Varesino soap, Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street cream, Trumper rose cream, Harris Windsor cream, Santa Maria Novella cream, Lea soap, Tabac soap, Barrister & Mann Latha and Santal soaps, Rose of Bulgaria cream, Truefitt & Hill 1805 and Ultimate Comfort creams, Portos Cale soap, the Art of Shaving lavender and sandalwood creams, the Art of Shaving soap (old formula), Valobra soap, Cella cream, Mama Bear soap.

Over the course of the coming months and depending on a how deep my pockets are, I'm going to see if I can start purchasing some of these soaps / creams.

All good options. Some are more expensive than others, but I think it all depends on the budget.

All I gathered from that list is that I have only ever used second tier soaps

Don't worry Dini, only two of my soaps make the 2nd tier list, the rest are all 3rd tier and below according to the classification index.

Even soaps suchs a Jabonman (artisan soap made in Spain) and Meiβner Tremonia (from Germany) don't make the grade and these have a massively good rep amongst the shaving community.

As far as I'm aware MdC is only available from their online store in France.

Dr Harris you can get locally from Fruugo

I've noticed around the MdC, I'm worried that it will go the same route as Cobbs - where the price is high and performance on par with less expensive soaps. It's an expensive shipping cost. Hence my thoughts on Le Pere Lucien instead of MdC.

Not cool showing me to Fruugo, not cool man, now I have to resist more urges...

Thanks for the links Thug. All great soaps. Just a heads up that Soap Commander isn't taking order at the moment (the owner's son was involved in a bad car accident recently, so they have stopped operations for the time being).

Also, our suppliers do have stock of Le Pere Lucien. It will be expensive though - R350 for 98g tin. You can get refills a bit cheaper though. Currently, I have my eye on Taylor Of Old Bond Street creams, as well as Edwin Jagger Soaps. I think these two offer good performance at very nice price point.

X-Pec cream from Italy is also very highly regarded but the price is in the ADP range (Approx R1000 for 250 ml tub).

If they Le Pere Lucien Rose de Pushkar I'll take one straight away - best not to show me their catalog...

I'll have a look. They had a few LPL soaps (Some in 200g containgers and some in 98 gram).

MdC is probably the top rated soap in the world at the moment if you look through the various Shaving fora.
I would say that if we can get a bulk buy going, the shipping would be a lot more reasonable bringing down the landed price.

Please let me know which LPL you can get. I would be very interested.

Shipping to Cape Town (assuming that it's the same throughout Afrique du Sud is €8.80 + €42.50 for 200g MdC
1 € to 1 ZAR 17.31 atm
R325.55 Shipping

Deduct the VAT off the MdC price as the quoted price on the website includes VAT. The net price is €34.58 for the FOUGÈRE 200gr
You would have to add 3% to the exchange rate as well, which is the rate that I normally get charged when paying through Paypal. Although MdC don't accept PP.
